If you are a westerner missing home, Shanghai is probably the place you want to visit! The juxtaposition of old temples and traditional food with H&M and local brunch spots, makes Shanghai the perfect remedy for any homesick westerner.

I had the privilege of traveling to Shanghai during my birthday weekend which also happens to be Halloween, so the city was buzzing with festivity. We spent the weekend exploring the night life, shopping, and checking out some of the local temples. The highlight of my trip was the Haunted on the Huangpu Halloween cruise with Dragon Adventures. The music was great, the drinks were flowing, and the organizers provided us with a table to celebrate my birthday with a large cake.

I have nothing insightful to say about Shanghai this time around, but here are a few suggestions if you decide to visit for 72 hours or less!

Found 158

158 Julu Lu,
near Ruijin Lu

巨鹿路158号, 近瑞金路

Amazing bar and restaurant complex. Not too far from the subway and most taxi drivers know exactly where it is.

Homeslice

B1/F, 158 Julu Lu,
near Ruijin Yi Lu

巨鹿路158号B1楼, 近瑞金一路

New York style pizza place located in the Found 158 bar and restaurant complex. This was everything I needed that weekend. I missed the taste of pizza so much!

Egg

12 Xiangyang Bei Lu
near Julu Lu
襄阳北路12号,近巨鹿路

8:00am – 6:30pm every day

A quaint brunch spot that serves western style breakfast. They have some interesting flavors available and many of their menu items are available as vegan/vegetarian options. I would not recommend this place for a group over 4 people. It is a pretty small location and they do not take reservations.

Maya

568 Julu Rd., Grand Plaza, Clubhouse 2nd Fl. (near Shaanxi Road)

上海市巨鹿路568弄四方新城

Free flowing alcohol and tasty Mexican food choices. If you’re accustom to the “turn-up” brunches of New York, lower your expectations. The music is either extremely low or non-existent. On the flip side the cocktails were good, the food was yummy, and the staff was super attentive.

Dragon Adventures

Promoters we used to find our Huangpu party cruise. It was a good time and it seems they also plan group trips around Asia! I’ll be checking in with them to plan a trip to Harbin this winter!
